LIM Faculty Member Receives Fellowship

It supports five weeks of full-time work on a project that is intended to cross-fertilize Dr. Ruiz’s research and teaching.

His project entails developing a set of learning modules for Blackboard that introduce students to biblical passages that advocate violence or use violent language and imagery to present their messages as the Word of God, passages often called “texts of terror”; the modules will also guide students in developing hermeneutical strategies for interpreting these texts. Dr. Ruiz explains his goals for this project, “These modules will aid my students in considering the complex relationship between texts of terror and readers who, because of their ethnic and gender identities, highlight the ‘terrorizing’ aspects of these texts, and will help them become more intellectually mature and pastorally sensitive interpreters, traits that will lead them to engage the Bible in liberative and life-affirming ways in their particular ministerial contexts.”

Dr. Ruiz is currently a participant in the Wabash Center's Teaching and Learning Workshop for Pre-Tenure Theological Faculty. The Wabash Center is funded by Lilly Endowment Inc. and is located at Wabash College, Crawfordsville, Indiana.
