Graduate Assistantships

Loyola’s Counseling Program offers six Graduate Assistant (GA) positions to a select group of students who are able to go above and beyond the educational experience of the program. The workload of a GA consists of an average of 20 hours per week during the Fall and Spring semesters for a total of 300 hours and an average of 20 hours per week during the Summer semester for a total of 160 hours. Graduate Assistants receive a 50% reduction in tuition during the semesters they are GAs.


GAs are responsible for a variety of departmental, academic, and administrative duties. Examples of GA duties are:

  • assisting faculty with teaching

  • assisting in research projects for the department, an individual faculty member, or his or her own research project (research is a mandatory requirement for the Graduate Assistant position)

  • presenting original research at conferences and the Loyola Graduate Research Symposium

  • attending new student interviews

  • meeting with prospective students

  • performing limited clerical work 

  • assisting in planning departmental events (fall BBQ, spring crawfish boil, socials)

  • maintain and update department social media accounts

Note: One GA is assigned to work with Dr. Steen in the Play Therapy Center as the Assistant Director of the Play Therapy Center.

 

Selection Criteria

Open GA positions are announced via email to all full-time and newly accepted counseling students.
