Professors Give Presentation at National Conference

Professors John Dewell and Kevin Foose recently traveled to Cleveland to give a presentation at the National Conference for the Association of Humanistic Counseling. Their presentation, entitled "Transgressive Encounters in Counselor Training: Teaching Toward Post-Humanist Paradigms" was summarized as follows:

Many academics and supervisors develop students within a paradigm that prioritizes linear and reductionist ways of being. This encourages trainees to respond to clients in a similar manner. Unfortunately, this often means neglecting to provide a clinical encounter that offers clients the possibility of transgressing their current situation. This presentation will discuss the need to model transgressive encounters and what it might look like in modern education.

Following the presentation, Dr. Dewell and Mr. Foose engaged in many fruitful discussions with other conference-goers about shifting paradigms in humanist counseling and counselor education. We look forward to their continued research in this area.
