The Certificate in Translation & Interpreting (TRIN) is a non-credit certificate program offered jointly by the Office of Professional & Continuing Studies and the Department of Languages & Cultures. It is designed for fully bilingual students who are interested in learning techniques and codes of practice in the fields of Spanish/English, English/Spanish translation and interpreting in legal and/or healthcare settings.
The certificate is either a 5 course, 15 credits (Healthcare OR Legal translation) program or a 7 course, 21 credits (combination Healthcare AND Legal Translation) continuing education program. Students are awarded three continuing education units (CEUs) for each course that they complete. Students can choose between the smaller concentrated certificate in either Healthcare or Legal Translation & Interpreting or the combined Healthcare and Legal Certificate in Translation & Interpreting.
Courses are offered in the spring and fall semesters, two courses per semester, one in the first 8-week session, and one in the last 8-week session. All translation courses (first 8-week session) will be entirely online using the Blackboard system. All interpreting courses (last 8-week session) will be held on campus, one evening per week. The day, time and location of the on-campus classes will be posted in LORA (Loyola Online Student Access). Each semester we will offer the translation and the interpreting introductory courses. The two courses specific to healthcare translation & interpreting will be offered in the spring semester only, and the two courses specific to legal translation & interpreting will be offered in the fall semester only.
Students who wish to acquire the completed certificate in both Healthcare and Legal Settings will be able to take courses each semester. Students who only wish to get their certificate in one of these two areas may start as soon as they are accepted but will only be able to take the specialized courses in the semester during which they are offered. The final course is a 40-hour internship. The internship is considered a course and as such is the same cost and billed in the same way as all other courses. Internship information here
